    Karton Kapak
An easy-to-master, fun-to-do, step-by-step guide to making your own Impressionist paintings. In this approach to Impressionism and its methods, the author’s instruction enables amateur artists to paint like the Impressionists. The book is illustrated with well-known works of art, and shows how the masters achieved their effects and how their ideas and styles can be adapted today. An introduction provides historical background to Impressionism, and a section is included on artist’s materials available then and now. Demonstrations show how to achieve the desired effects, from the initial sketch to the finished painting. Sections on the artists provide insight into individual techniques. You will learn how to re-create the style of Monet’s landscapes, Cézanne’s still lifes, or Degas’s figures, and see your own Impressionism develop from the first brushstroke to the finished painting. • Stefan Kürten: Shadowtime

    Sert Kapak
Stefan Kürten's paintings investigate the house as site of warmth and comfort, as idyll and lifestyle symbol--though humans are always absent from his interiors. • Color: Creative Painting Series

    Sert Kapak
Color is the second volume in Barron's new art instruction series that focuses on creation of finished, professional-looking paintings. Books in this series are intended for use by advanced art students and experienced amateurs. Understanding and mastering color is an indispensable skill for creating paintings in oil, watercolor, tempera, gouache, and other color media, and this book analyzes all aspects and uses of color in art. The authors explain the color circle, then apply color theory to demonstrate effective use of complementary and contrasting colors. Drawing extensively on works by major painters, they show how artists use color to express moods and emotions, as well as how to create surreal effects by heightening contrasts, or by giving objects colors unlike those in nature. They discuss techniques for applying color in various wet and dry media and show how color plays an important role in an abstract painting. Their examples include paintings by such artists as Degas, Van Gogh, Picasso, Delaunay, Ernst, Rothko, and many others. Full-color illustrations on every page.

  • Space

    Sert Kapak
Titles in the distinctive "Creative Painting" art instruction series focus on creating highly finished, professional quality paintings, and are intended mainly for use by advanced art students. This volume concentrates on the widely divergent approaches to creating the illusion of space and depth on flat surfaces. They include a mastery of the rules of perspective, as employed for instance in traditional landscapes and cityscapes, but they also focus on the purposeful absence of depth, as seen in the abstractions of Mondrian and other artists of the recent past. Detailed instruction also concentrates on the use of light and shadow to enhance the illusion of dimension, and the employment of unusual points of view to emphasize vertical structures, dramatic body poses, and extraordinary views in landscapes. Beautiful and instructive color illustrations on every page include many reproductions of works by famous artists

  • The Subject in Art: Portraiture and the Birth of the Modern

The Subject in Art: Portraiture and the Birth of the Modern

    Karton Kapak
Challenging prevailing theories regarding the birth of the subject, Catherine M. Soussloff argues that the modern subject did not emerge from psychoanalysis or existential philosophy but rather in the theory and practice of portraiture in early-twentieth-century Vienna. Soussloff traces the development in Vienna of an ethics of representation that emphasized subjects as socially and historically constructed selves who could only be understood—and understand themselves—in relation to others, including the portrait painters and the viewers. In this beautifully illustrated book, she demonstrates both how portrait painters began to focus on the interior lives of their subjects and how the discipline of art history developed around the genre of portraiture.Soussloff combines a historically grounded examination of art and art historical thinking in Vienna with subsequent theories of portraiture and a careful historiography of philosophical and psychoanalytic approaches to human consciousness from Hegel to Sartre and from Freud to Lacan. She chronicles the emergence of a social theory of art among the art historians of the Vienna School, demonstrates how the Expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka depicted the Jewish subject, and explores the development of pictorialist photography. Reflecting on the implications of the visualized, modern subject for textual and linguistic analyses of subjectivity, Soussloff concludes that the Viennese art historians, photographers, and painters will henceforth have to be recognized as precursors to such better-known theorists of the subject as Sartre, Foucault, and Lacan.

  • Street Graphics Tokyo (Street Graphics)

    Street Graphics Tokyo (Street Graphics)

    Karton Kapak
Street graphics have become the visual language of cities. Signs and symbols instruct, inform, portray concerns, and express aspirations. Culturally specific, they are also increasingly universal, always creative, and always fun. Tokyo's vibrant street graphics combine ancient tradition, twentieth-century mass production, and a twenty-first-century urban vision that is uniquely Japanese. A colorful clash of imagery renders the familiar strange and the strange bizarre. Cartoon characters can signify the police or pornography. Fashion statements are derived from diverse sources—ancient Egypt or even a hospital operating room. Slot machines vend erotica; pets and cops are robots; tempting dishes of sushi turn out to be inedible plastic representations. Ridley Scott's futuristic film Blade Runner was inspired by Tokyo's neon nightscape, where a fashionable department store doubles as a giant digital TV screen featuring lifesize dinosaurs in Godzilla's hometown. Barry Dawson's photographic vision of Tokyo forms a creative reference for students and designers, as well as an imaginative, offbeat pictorial guide for visitors and armchair travelers. 150 color illustrations

  • Form - Creative Painting Series

    Form - Creative Painting Series

    Sert Kapak
Form is the first volume in a new art instruction series from Barron's focusing on several different approaches to creating imaginative, finished, highly professional paintings. The titles in this series are designed for use by advanced students and experienced amateurs. A painting's form is the element that lends it visual coherence, and form derives from combinations of shapes as simple as triangles, circles, and squares, or as complex as intersecting lines and overlapping irregular shapes intended to suggest motion, perspective, repose, or very many other qualities. This title shows examples of still life, portraits, landscapes, water scenes, skies, and even abstract paintings, then analyzes these works, demonstrating in clear illustrations the fundamental shapes from which each painting is constructed. Examples include works by famous artists, among them, Leonardo da Vinci, Joshua Reynolds, Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Joan Mir³, Wassily Kandinsky, and many others. Vivid and instructive color illustrations on every page.
