  • Arne Quinze: Modern Contemporary

    Sert Kapak
Belgian artist Arne Quinze (born 1971) uses "poor" materials to fashion makeshift dwellings presented as sculptural installations. In their extreme precariousness, Quinze's Stilt Houses and Bidonvillesparody the haste with which residential buildings are often erected today, and point to the alienated character of citydwelling in their gapingly dehisced state.

  • A House Full of Music: Strategies in Music and Art

    Sert Kapak
Famously described by Schönberg as "not a composer, but an inventor--of genius," John Cage (1912-1992) was one of the great strategists and pioneers of twentieth-century music and art. A House Full of Music celebrates Cage's one-hundredth birthday by examining 12 fundamental strategies through which art and music have informed each other: recording, collage, silence, destruction, calculation, coincidence, feeling, thought, belief, furnishing, repetition and playing. Starting with such key figures as Erik Satie, Marcel Duchamp, Nam June Paik and Joseph Beuys, this book conjoins essays by art and music theorists with works by artists, musicians and composers. This landmark publication on a century-long "music circus" features everyone from Arnold Schönberg, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, Carsten Nicolai and Robert Filliou to Laurie Anderson, Anri Sala, Einstürzende Neubauten, Frank Zappa and many others.

  • Leisurama Now: The Beach House for Everyone 1964

    Sert Kapak
"It was the ultimate turnkey operationdown to the color-coordinated toothbrushes in the bathroom. All you needed were your clothes and a six-pack" Frank Tauma, Montauk real estate broker Who doesn't dream of owning a second home at the beach? Well, in the early 1960s, it was a snap even for the working class. For as little as $590 down and $73 a month, you could walk into Macy's and leave with a fully furnished house. All you needed to move in was a key and some groceries. Each house came complete with furniture, appliances, a45-piece Melmac dinner service, plastic glasses, and fifty pieces of stainless-steel flatware, plus towels, napkins, placemats, beds, pillows and sheets, even toothbrushes. The homes also promised low maintenance with redwood siding and interior paneling that never needed painting and had lifetime guarantees. In Leisurama, author Paul Sahre uncovers the mystery of this legendary slice of architectural Americana and lovingly documents its forty-year history with a treasure trove of text, photographs, historical documentation, and oral histories. Two hundred and fifty Leisurama houses were built at Culloden Shores in Montauk, Long Island. Most of thehomes have since been converted to year-round occupancy, and with very few exceptions, all have been enlarged andredecorated, while the once barren shore is now forested. In a sweet paradox, these once very affordable homes thatwere looked down upon by more well-to-do neighbors are now desirable and expensive, even "collectable." Their richlegacy lives on in the affordable pages ofLeisurama.

  • The Metalworker's Art: A Pictorial Celebration

The Metalworker's Art: A Pictorial Celebration

    Karton Kapak
A broad survey of metalwork from ancient times to the twentieth century, this acclaimed monograph displays 115 illustrations of ornamental designs. Images range from the windows and balconies of ancient Italian villages to the gates of English cathedrals and universities and the facades of New York City banks and hotels. Visually arresting examples of decorative ironwork include Parisian cabaret signs, Greek coins, and the gateway to a Scottish castle, plus lamps, doorknockers, stair railings, and more. The unusual mix of drawings and photographs occasionally depicts pieces in both the design and finished stages. This volume draws upon a wealth of metalworking precedents, including the patient and primitive processes of the medieval smithy as well as the Renaissance crafts of Spain, Italy, and England. It consists chiefly of bronze and iron works but also explores the decorative possibilities of lead, copper, and newer resources such as aluminum, chromium, and nickel alloys. Architectural historians and metalworkers interested in the history of their craft will find this book a valuable resource.

  • Instant: The Story of Polaroid

    Instant: The Story of Polaroid

    Sert Kapak
"Instant photography at the push of a button!" During the 1960s and '70s, Polaroid was the coolest technology company on earth. Like Apple, it was an innovation machine that cranked out one must-have product after another. Led by its own visionary genius founder, Edwin Land, Polaroid grew from a 1937 garage start-up into a billion-dollar pop-culture phenomenon. Instant tells the remarkable tale of Land's one-of-a-kind invention-from Polaroid's first instant camera to hit the market in 1948, to its meteoric rise in popularity and adoption by artists such as Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol, and Chuck Close, to the company's dramatic decline into bankruptcy in the late '90s and its unlikely resurrection in the digital age. Instant is both an inspiring tale of American ingenuity and a cautionary business tale about the perils of companies that lose their creative edge.
