  • The Changing Garden: Four Centuries of European and American Art

    Karton Kapak
This beautifully illustrated volume examines the garden as an enduring and evolving cultural resource, in two hundred works by more than one hundred artists. Prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings illuminate the changing aesthetics and uses of gardens from sixteenth-century Italian villas and Louis XIV's Versailles to such democratic urban parks as New York City's Central Park and San Francisco's Crissy Field, adapted from a former military base.Artists' representations of gardens have been organized first to highlight design concepts and individual features, then to focus on historic gardens and parks, and finally to survey the activities within those settings. Among the earliest works included is an engraving of a drawing made in 1570 by Pieter Bruegel the Elder of a garden being vigorously cultivated by many workers. Two centuries later, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Jean-Honoré Fragonard represented the Villa d'Este at Tivoli in a state of neglected grandeur; Hubert Robert's painting of Méréville depicted a garden he helped design. By 1900 Eugène Atget's photographs of Versailles and Camille Pissarro's paintings of the Tuileries convey the enduring structure of French formal gardens. In contrast, American artists Maurice Prendergast, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler depicted the pleasures of social activities in that setting. Photographs by Michael Kenna and Bruce Davidson offer contemporary perspectives on these issues.

  • Daniel Joseph Martinez: A Life of Disobedience

    Sert Kapak
For more than 30 years, Los Angeles-born artist Daniel Joseph Martinez has been honing his politically-inflected practice, which critic Jeffrey Kastner has characterized as "unapologetically prob[ing] uncomfortable issues of personal and collective identity, seeking out threadbare spots in the fabric of conventional wisdom." A wry provocateur, Martinez incorporates an impressive array of media including text, painting, photography, sculpture, video, performance--even animatronics. Known for the controversial pin he created as an interactive piece for the 1993 Whitney Biennial that read, "I can't imagine ever wanting to be white," this volume, with essays by Michael Brenson, David Levi Strauss, Hakim Bey and Gilbert Vicario, provides an in-depth look at selected works from 1978 through Martinez's 2008 Whitney Biennial entry, "Divine Violence," including his contributions to the San Juan Triennial in 2004, the Cairo Biennial in 2006 and the Moscow Biennial in 2007

  • Towering Mirrors, Mirroring Towers: Photographs of Urban Reflections

Towering Mirrors, Mirroring Towers: Photographs of Urban Reflections

    Sert Kapak
Towering Mirrors is a study in visual abstraction, as well as a showcase of modern architecture. The volume takes us on a nation-wide tour of magnificent buildings, from Chicago to Dallas to Sarasota, Florida. The collection features incredible variety: some shots are humorous and full of color; some are curious and surreal; still others are somber and impressive. Using nothing more than skillful framing and careful timing, Weinberg perfectly captures the striking beauty of American skyscrapers. Each shot is an experiment in color and composition, making surprisingly interesting subjects of the ordinary places where people work and live

  • Music and Image in Classical Athens

Music and Image in Classical Athens

    Sert Kapak
Sheramy Bundrick proposes that the depictions of musical performance in fifth century BC Athens were intimately linked to contemporary developments in the field of music itself, such as the debate over music in education, theories of musical ethos, and the growing popularity of professional musicians. Moreover, she argues that music became a visual metaphor for the harmony or disharmony of the city. Her book is the first to consider the broad range of musical images in the dynamic classical period, as well as their sociocultural and artistic implications.

  • Le monde extraordinaire des fourmis

    Le monde extraordinaire des fourmis

    Sert Kapak

  • The Digital Photography Book, Part 2

The Digital Photography Book, Part 2

    Karton Kapak
Scott Kelby, author of The Digital Photography Book, part 1, the top-selling digital photography book of all time, is back with an entirely new book that picks up right where part 1 left off. It's more of that “Ah ha–so that's how they do it,” straight-to-the-point, skip-thetechno- jargon stuff you can really use today that made part 1 so successful. This book truly has a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: “If you and I were out on a shoot and you asked me, ‘When I use my flash, the background behind the person I’m shooting turns black. How do I fix that?’ I wouldn’t give you a lecture on flash ratios, or start a discussion on flash synchronization and rear curtain sync. I’d just say, ‘Lower your shutter speed to 1/60 of a second. That should do it.’ Well, that’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting, where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned just like I would with a friend–without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.”Each page covers a single concept on how to make your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you’re tired of taking shots that look “okay,” and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, “Why don’t my shots look like that?” then this is the book for you. This isn’t a book of theory–full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With over 200 of the most closely guarded photographic “tricks of the trade,” this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time.

The Digital Photography Book: Part: 1

    Karton Kapak
This is it—the #1 best-selling digital photography book ever! It’s the award winning, worldwide smash hit, written by Scott Kelby, that’s been translated into dozens of different languages, because it’s the one book that really shows you how to take professional-quality shots using the same tricks today’s top digital pros use (and surprisingly, it’s easier than you’d think). This updated, second edition of the bestselling digital photography book of all time includes many new images; up-to-date information on gear, pricing, and links; and a new chapter from the author on the "Ten Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me When I Was First Starting Out in Photography." Here’s how Scott describes this book’s brilliant premise: “If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, ‘Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, with the background out of focus?,’ I wouldn’t stand there and give you a photography lecture. In real life, I’d just say, ‘Put on your zoom lens, set your f-stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.’ That’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned just like I would with a friend—without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.”This isn’t a book of theory—full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts.
