  • Analysis to Synthesis: The Development of Complex Verb Morphology in the Dravidian Languages

    Sert Kapak
Analysis to Synthesis introduces the process of Compound Verb Contraction to analyze the genesis of synthetic verb forms in the Dravidian languages. Contraction provides an explanation for their development from analytic forms by creating a paradigm of historical evolution that utilizes the formal and functional attributes of both the earlier and later forms. Triggered by a variety of different factors, Contraction guides the evolution of complex verb forms by using markedness relations to correlate their morphological, syntactic, and lexical dimensions. An original work in comparative Dravidian linguistics,Analysis to Synthesis provides etymologies for fifteen conjugations which have hitherto resisted explanation. All fifteen show the same general development, allowing us to extract a common historical pattern and clarify the reconstruction of Proto-Dravidian typology. Thanks to Contraction, the verb morphology and syntax of the protolanguage, as well as its lexical structure, are shown to exhibit a relatively analytic structure. Because it correlates general dimensions of linguistic structure, Contraction may readily be applied to languages beyond the Dravidian family. Detailed and closely argued, this study provides a model for the analysis of similar forms in other languages and language families.

  • Do You Make These Mistakes in English?: The Story of Sherwin Cody's Famous Language School

    Sert Kapak
In the early 1900s, the language of America was becoming colloquial English-the language of the businessman, manager, and professional. Since college and high school education were far from universal, many people turned to correspondence education-that era's distance learning-to learn the art of speaking and writing. By the 1920s and 1930s, thousands of Americans were sending coupons from newspapers and magazines to order Sherwin Cody's 100% Self-correcting Course in the English Language, a patented mail-order course in English that was taken by over 150,000 people.Cody's ubiquitous signature advertisement, which ran for over forty years, promised a scientifically-tested invention that improved speaking and writing in just 15 minutes a day. Cody's ad explained that people are judged by their English, and he offered self-improvement and self-confidence through the mail.In this book, linguist Edwin Battistella tells the story of Sherwin Cody and his famous English course, situating both the man and the course in early twentieth century cultural history. The author shows how Cody became a businessman-a writer, grammatical entrepreneur, and mass-marketer whose ads proclaimed "Good Money in Good English" and asked "Is Good English Worth 25 Cents to You?" His course, perhaps the most widely-advertised English education program in history, provides a unique window onto popular views of language and culture and their connection to American notions of success and failure. But Battistella shows Sherwin Cody was also part of a larger shift in attitudes. Using Cody's course as a reference point, he also looks at the self-improvement ethic reflected in such courses and products as the Harvard Classics, The Book of Etiquette, the Book-of-the-Month Club, the U.S. School of Music, and the Charles Atlas and Dale Carnegie courses to illustrate how culture became popular and how self-reliance evolved into self-improvement.

  • The Linguistic Legacy of Spanish and Portuguese: Colonial Expansion and Language Change (Cambridge Approaches to Language Contact)

    Sert Kapak
The historical spread of Spanish and Portuguese throughout the world provides a rich source of data for linguists studying how languages evolve and change. This volume analyses the development of Portuguese and Spanish from Latin and their subsequent transformation into several non-standard varieties. These varieties include Portuguese- and Spanish-based creoles, Bozal Spanish and Chinese Coolie Spanish in Cuba, Chinese Immigrant Spanish, Andean Spanish, and Barranquenho, a Portuguese variety on the Portugal-Spain border. Clancy Clements demonstrates that grammar formation not only takes place in parent-to-child communication, but also, importantly, in adult-to-adult communication. He argues that cultural identity is also an important factor in language formation and maintenance, especially in the cases of Portuguese, Castilian, and Barranquenho. More generally, the contact varieties of Portuguese and Spanish have been shaped by demographics, by prestige, as well as by linguistic input, general cognitive abilities and limitations, and by the dynamics of speech community.

  • A Modular Approach to Testing English Language Skills: The Development of the Certificates in English

    Sert Kapak
Documents the development of the Cambridge ESOL Certificates in English Language Skills (CELS), a suite of modular examinations first offered in 2002. As a context for how CELS was conceived, developed, constructed, validated and managed, the book traces the history of exams which have influenced CELS. The Royal Society of Arts (RSA), later UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate) Communicative Use of English as a Foreign Language examinations (CUEFL) was one such influence, as were the Certificates in Communication Skills in English (CCSE), these exams being a development of the CUEFL. The University of Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations (UODLE) examinations, taken over by UCLES in 1995, were a further influence on CELS. UODLE itself had worked in partnership with the Association of Recognised Language Schools (ARELS) Examinations Trust, the Oxford EFL reading and writing exams for many years offered in tandem with the ARELS Oral English exams.
